Mission
Statement:
The
mission of St. Basil College Seminary is to educate and prepare
men who desire to pursue a vocation to the priesthood for
the Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Accredited
by the State of Connecticut, St. Basil College offers a four
year liberal arts education leading to a degree in philosophy
as preparation for its graduates to pursue the study of theology
at a major seminary.
St.
Basils College strives to maintain a balance of spiritual,
intellectual, pastoral, and human formation as defined in
the USCCB document The Program of Priestly Formation
and all other papal and synodal documents directing
the formation of future priests.
Description
of the Goals and Objectives of the College:
St.
Basil College is a center of learning and formation. As a
College, it aims to help the student mature as a liberally
educated person, committed to Christ and to the service of
people. Hopefully, the student will accomplish this through
the choice of the priesthood as a vocation of service.
The
academic program of the college embodies the goals of a four-year
liberal arts college. It gives the student an awareness of
traditional and contemporary thought in the liberal arts based
on a philosophical and pre-theological core curriculum. It
focuses on man's place in history and world cultures.
The
program also emphasizes the art of communication and the moral
principles that should govern personal and public affairs.
Its most important ingredients are critical thinking and philosophical
analysis. It inspires the student with a love for seeking,
honoring, and defending the truth vigorously, along with an
honest recognition of the limitations of human understanding.
It fosters the habit of continuous, life-long learning and
exploration in the pursuit of wisdom and prudence.
The
College has further objectives. Its community life reflects
the influence of its goal, that of the priesthood, by accentuating
spiritual, social, historical, and cultural development
It
encourages the student's desire to give true witness to the
saving love of God in the world. It seeks to develop those
values that "are highly regarded among men and speak
well of a minister of Christ," so that he may communicate
effectively with others within the seminary and with those
in outside communities. As a result, the student is enabled
to grow in academic awareness, religious commitment, social
responsibility, and cultural development.
Recent
events in Eastern Europe have caused the college to broaden
its objectives. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union,
the independence of Ukraine, and the emergence of the Ukrainian
Catholic Church, there has been an increase in vocations to
the priesthood, exceeding the capacity of the seminaries in
Western Ukraine. Consequently, the Board of Trustees has opened
the doors of the College to young men from Eastern Europe.
An English as a Second Language Program has been initiated
with a curriculum geared to the special needs of these foreign
student-seminarians.
